By the end of 1975, the Eleventh House band was either splintering or finding new direction. Recorded only a few months after the departure of Alphonse Mouzon (drums) and Michael Lawrence (trumpet), this version of the Eleventh House group is rarely showcased. As a quartet (sans a horn player), Coryell and keyboardist Mike Mandel are forced to pick up many of the crucial horn lines through their respective instruments, and with new drummer Gerald Brown added into the fold, the vibe is funky, loose and jamming. Coryell picks up much more of the solo spotlight than usual, leaving this entire program to be played with a little more urgency. A rare, unearthed recording, and taken directly from the soundboard, the sound quality is stellar. |
